In a given society, an economic, educational, governmental and religious institution has to be encompassed by its system to make it complete. The education institution is one of the most important social institutions. Apparently, this organization helps in instilling knowledge to members of a given society, thus, enhancing the growth and development process of the community. Furthermore, access to higher education increases the number of skilled professionals that a given society has improved its status. However, access to education has often been a problem as a result of social stratification. Therefore, in this essay, I am going to look at how social stratification in the society affects the education institution. ( Social Stratification and Access of Education) Sociology defines the term social stratification as the act hierarchically grouping individuals into social groups which are unequal. The traits of social stratification include; a passage from one generation to another, societal attribute, carried out worldwide although in different ways and involved society’s beliefs. For instance, in the United States stratification is often determined by social class, race, and gender. As a result of education becoming a core societal value, sociologists have come up with three theories. First, the Functionalist theory which focuses on the ways in which knowledge is used to fulfill a variety of human needs.
